Hospitality Management

Hospitality Management is the academic study of the hospitality industry and has become the number one sought after field by many youngsters. It is a systematic study of the running of hotels, restaurants, and travel and tourism-related business. There is unlimited scope for professionals with a Hospitality Management background not only in hotels, but other areas in the service sector in India and abroad.A career in this field gives the opportunity to interact with people like no other field.
Hospitality Management focuses on functions such as front office operations, food and beverages, sales and marketing, management and housekeeping. It mainly consists of hotels and restaurants management, cruise ship lodge management, travel and tourism, airline catering, cabin services, hospital administration and club services.

UG: For admission to a bachelor’s program, the candidate must have passed the higher secondary school certificate (10+2) examination. The duration of this course is 3 years.

PG: The eligibility criteria for pursuing a master’s degree includes completion of a bachelor’s degree. Students seeking admission will have to attend an entrance exam such as MAT/CAT/XAT or ATMA. The duration of the course is 2 years.

Job Prospects:
Hospitality Management is part of the service industry - an industry that brings in more money and creates more jobs than any other. Business majors who have obtained a Hospitality Management degree, diploma, or certificate should have no problem securing a management position in this growing field. The industry has changed significantly, offering high salaries, stability and career growth and hence, hospitality graduates can look beyond careers in hotels.Professionals who have an aptitude for teaching and academics can also opt for teaching jobs in universities and colleges.

To make the most out of a career in this field, one should aim to work with a single organization all his life. An entry level job to start with and then work one’s way up. In this manner, the individual can gain experience of running the business at every level, can get a better perspective of the organization and will even know and understand every small business nuance.

The remuneration as in all industries, varies depending on the skills, qualification and experience. Initial salary starts with Rs. 8,000 to Rs. 10,000.  Others from top institutions with work experience can get anywhere from Rs. 20,000 to Rs. 50,000.
